Are you matching or creating the energy of the room?

Some people and situations don’t serve you - protecting and harnessing the power of your energy.

Beyond our own perspective and actions, we also, very importantly, need to consider who we are surrounding ourselves by and with, as we are influenced, moved, and affected by those in our company and hearts.  If all those around us are filled with fear, lack, disappointment, criticism, hate, jealousy, dismay, expectations of failure, worry and envy then our thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and energy is influenced and too easily matches such. Everything is energy- whether referring to the energy needed to act and do, or the energy needed to run computers, lights, the world, we are surrounded by energy of which we are made or which supports and creates our modern world.  So just like the battery-life of our phones can be drained by the apps we choose to download and become a part of our phones’ existence and use, which can either be supporting tools or major detractors, negative sources, and drains, so too can the people we allow in our lives affect the energy we have and our approach to the world. It is circular, your energy feeds and shapes your perspective of your day, which affects your energy and in turn effects your actions, which energy then affects your energy. So, to change your perspective and energy, you must start by becoming aware of what and who is feeding your perspective and energy.

As early as could be appreciated and understood, I have asked my kids to be aware of the energy that swirls around them – are they walking into a classroom, a discussion, a room, where the energy is collaborative, uplifting, accepting, joyous, or are they walking into fear, depression, feelings of sadness, anger, frustration, disappointment, or some other negative emotion? How is your perspective and energy being formed and affected?  The first step in protecting and positively feeding your perspective and energy is awareness – awareness of who and what surrounds you.  This awareness allows you to actively decide if you want to match the energy of the room or if it is not an energy that serves you, then how and what you do to protect your energy and perspective? Do you change the energy and perspective you are confronted with, or remove yourself from the situation and/or people who are working against your energy and perspective?  Your perspective and energy are there to serve you, enlighten you, and support you in your actions and endeavors.  To change the energy is not an easy task, but becomes easier with time and practice of many life tools. Sometimes, you must remove yourself from the situation or the people that are draining your energy and surrounding you with negativity. In either case you must make daily choices about who you allow to affect your energy and how to use your energy of each day, and further, to take positive and intentional action through sleep, exercise and engaging with people and activities that replenish and elevate your energy.

I once had a very perceptive self-aware high school student tell me she has a bad habit of mirroring energy, and she was working on that. When I asked her to explain that to me, she told me that if she walks into a classroom, even if she is excited and eager to learn, if the teacher is disinterested and frustrated then she herself becomes disinterested and frustrated, and it negatively affects her, and results in her poor approach to whatever she was supposed to be learning.  I asked her if she was aware when it was happening, and if she realized she was choosing to match the energy of the room, instead of allowing her excited and eager energy to shift the energy of that room.  I asked her if she thought that it was possible that her displayed energy of excitement and eagerness could positively affect the teacher.  As our discussion ensued, she shared that she never thought about the power of her own energy.  She thought about how in working on not mirroring negative energy how she could protect her energy and perspective, but she didn’t recognize or value the power that her energy and perspective could have on others to actually elevate the energy and perspectives in the room and relationships. It is a basic tenet that so many have iterated, as noted by Dr. Wayne Dyer and so many others – “…. energy is contagious and it’s the vibe you’re sending out in the world.”  Your energy is powerful, it is to be protected and positively fed, for it is then sent out and affects others.

So, I ask you to protect your energy and value the power your energy has to affect others and the energy in the world. You will walk into many rooms and situations in life and each time you have a choice to either match the energy of the room or to create it.  If you are walking into a class or meeting where the energy is filled with disinterest, fear, anger, or frustration, instead of mirroring that energy, try using your energy to change the energy or at minimum protect your own energy – approach sadness with compassion, frustration with understanding, fear with hope, and know in every situation you have the choice and power to control your reaction.
